Twain Harte is not just a place—it’s a community with a rich history and deep roots. Originally inhabited by the Me Wuk Indians, the area was a haven for those who lived off the land, creating homes from the very materials the earth provided. Their intricate woven baskets, crafted from local willow branches, are still admired today.
The discovery of gold in 1849 near Columbia, Sonora, and Jamestown marked the beginning of a new chapter. This led to a surge of settlers who tapped into the region’s timber, agriculture, and grazing resources. The construction of a road connecting Sonora to the mining towns through the Twain Harte grade in 1861 brought even more growth, transforming the area into a thriving community.
A Legacy of Development
In 1924, Keturah C. Wood envisioned a serene retreat in the mountains and subdivided 540 acres of land, giving birth to what is now known as Twain Harte Lodge. Named in honor of two literary greats, Mark Twain and Bret Harte, this subdivision became the first private recreational area in the Sierra Nevada.
The development of Twain Harte continued, with significant contributions from Albert L. Nevins, Dr. E. Turner, and Edward M. Marquis, who helped shape the community into the beloved mountain retreat it is today. From the creation of the iconic Twain Harte Lake to the construction of homes and infrastructure, the area has flourished, drawing residents and visitors year after year.
